Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can be sudden, overwhelming, and frightening. They often occur without warning and may leave you feeling shaken, confused, or even convinced something is seriously wrong. At Circle Psychology Partners, we offer expert support for panic attacks and panic disorder, both online and in Southeast London.

A panic attack is a sudden, intense surge of fear or anxiety that peaks within minutes. It may be accompanied by physical symptoms such as:

  • Heart palpitations or chest pain

  • Shortness of breath or a choking sensation

  • Sweating, trembling, or dizziness

  • A fear of losing control, “going crazy,” or dying

  • Nausea, tingling, chills, or heat flushes

  • Feeling detached from reality (derealisation or depersonalisation)

While having a panic attack can feel alarming, it doesn’t always mean you have panic disorder.

What is Panic Disorder?

Panic disorder is diagnosed when someone experiences repeated and unexpected panic attacks, along with persistent fear of future attacks. This fear can lead to significant life changes—such as avoiding places, people, or activities where attacks have previously occurred.

You might find yourself feeling constantly “on edge,” changing routines, or avoiding public transport, social events, or work situations.

How Therapy Can Help

Our therapists will work with you to understand the patterns behind your panic, reduce fear, and build confidence in your ability to cope. Therapy can help you:

  • Identify triggers and early warning signs

  • Learn techniques to manage physical symptoms

  • Break the cycle of avoidance and fear

  • Rebuild a sense of safety and control

You don’t have to live in fear of your own body. With the right support, panic attacks can become manageable—and even stop altogether.

Our highly experienced therapists can help you to understand your panic disorder, and learn mechanisms to overcome your panic attacks through therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness based therapy.
