Laura Callaghan

Psychodynamic Psychotherapist and CBT Therapist in East Dulwich, South London, MA, PGCert, MPhil, BSc
Headshot Laura Callaghan psychotherapist

I am a dual qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist (children, adolescents and families) and cognitive behavioural therapist. I believe in the importance of meeting the young person and their family where they are at and working collaboratively with them to alleviate distress. My approach is to remain curious as to what is going on for each client, the meaning they are making of this and the impact on their lives.

The application of these diverse modalities in my work means that I can take a psychoanalytically informed view of a young persons presentation, working within the transference and unconscious projections while also providing time focused, practical interventions that can help alleviate the current distress they may be experiencing. This skill set is further enhanced by my first training and qualification as a social worker. I have robust training and many years experience in managing risk and disclosures and liaising with the relevant networks in these instances. I have also achieved a Masters of Philosophy in Race, ethnicity and conflict and the commitment to working ethically with diverse populations is one I hold strongly.

I have fifteen years experience of work with children, adolescents and their families across a range of health services and schools. I have specialist experience of working with gender identity, sexual orientation and neurodiversity. Many of the young people with whom I work have a diagnosis or query of autism or other types of neurodiversity e.g. ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Sensory Processing Disorder. Many also struggle with anxiety disorders alongside these conditions. I also have specialist experience of working with trauma specifically child sexual abuse and psychiatric inpatient admission. I have more general experience of working with the following difficulties; anxiety (including social anxiety, phobias, panic, health anxiety, generalised anxiety/worry, agoraphobia) low mood and depression, family difficulties (including post-adoption), eating difficulties, body image struggles, early trauma, obsessive-compulsive presentations and stress (including exam stress).

I see clients at Oru Space in East Dulwich.

Please kindly note that I only see self funding clients. I do not work with any private medical insurance providers.
