Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) ACT (a type of cognitive behavioural therapy) aims to help people live full and meaningful lives, whilst effectively handling the pain and stresses that life inevitably brings. It teaches skills such as mindfulness and acceptance to deal with difficult thoughts and feeling and helps clients to clarify what is truly important and meaningful to them in their lives. In ACT it is assumed that pain and suffering are a normal and unavoidable part of the human experience and that our attempts to control and avoid these experiences can lead to more long-term suffering. ACT teaches clients to notice, accept and embrace thoughts and feelings. It helps clients to determine what is out of their personal control and commit to actions that improve and enrich their lives.
